SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
The Illinois Learning Standards define what all students in Illinois public schools should know and be able to perform in the core areas as a result of being enrolled in their IL elementary and secondary schooling. Section 15(a) of Public Act 93-0495 requires the Illinois State Board of Education to "develop and implement a plan to incorporate social and emotional development standards as part of the Illinois Learning Standards. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which individuals acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to:
- recognize and manage their emotions;
- demonstrate caring and concern for others;
-establish positive relationships;
-make responsible decisions; and
-handle challenging situations constructively.

Social Emotional Learning Goals
- Goal 1: Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success.
- Goal 2: Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.
- Goal 3: Demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts.
How will HHS promote the SEL Standards?
1. HHS will be a safe and healthy learning environment conducive to appropriate application of the SEL skills;
2. Every student will be supported by highly qualified and effective teachers and school leaders;
3. HHS staff will take advantage of teachable moments that occur naturally throughout the day;
4. HHS will promote students' feelings of autonomy, relatedness, and competence; and
