What is the National Honor Society?
Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society is the premier organization to recognize the achievements and high ideals of today’s young adults. Due to this commitment of acknowledging top students and citizens, the organization has garnered a significant reputation among school administrators, faculty members, students, parents and residents of the community. Because it is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious school-based student recognition program in the country, the National Honor Society is considered to be the highest honor that can be bestowed upon students in secondary schools.

WHO IS ON THE FACULTY COUNCIL?
The members of the Faculty Council are kept confidential as per the NHS National Charter. Each year different teachers and staff are selected.
CAN I APPEAL THE DECISION OF THE FACULTY COUNCIL OF NOT OFFERING MEMBERSHIP?
A formal appeal process is established. Denied students have two school days to file an appeal after the Faculty Council's decision has been made. Appeals must be made in writing and be addressed to the High School Principal. Based upon the content of the letter, the Principal will decide if the appeal is warranted. If it is not warranted, no further action will be taken. If it is found to be, the student will have the opportunity to plead his/her case in front of the Faculty Council. At the end of that meeting, they will evaluate the student's membership status again. Appealing the decision and having the Principal decide that the Faculty Council should reconvene does not guarantee membership.
CAN MY MEMBERSHIP BE DISMISSED?
Yes! A member can be considered for disciplinary action including dismissal when performance falls below the acceptable levels of any of the standards by which he or she was selected, when the member fails to fulfill chapter obligations, or when the member is found guilty of violating school rules or the law. A student will be warned in writing whenever he or she falls below any standard. The Faculty Council determines when a consideration of dismissal is warranted. In all cases of pending dismissal, the chapter member has a right to a hearing in front of the Faculty Council. If a member is dismissed, written notice of the decision should be sent to the member, with copies to the Principal and Chapter Advisor. The member must then surrender the NHS emblem and membership card. If the member is unwilling to do this, the matter is to be treated as a school disciplinary matter.
